Friends encouraged me from way
back in the 1960s to enter the Federal Duck Stamp Contest. Finally
in about the late 70s I found "time" to start doing
that. I have entered sporadically since then. Here are most of
my entries. Most have involved research trips afield from Florida
to Seattle and Alaska. My first attempts are shown along with
more recent and closer contest placements. The Harlequin ranked
about 20th out of around 300 entries in 2007. The Canadian almost
won in 1996 at 6th out of about 500. The Widgeon 2009 ranked 14th
in the second round of 4 rounds of judging in Washington, D.C.
on October 16th, 2009. Whether I ever win is a prized goal, however
I enjoy, mostly, the times spent afield studying the birds and
trying to put the sneak on them for photography, sketching, and
study. Each painting involves about a week afield and at least
a week of 40 hours painting and there is a story behind each painting.
